We have been working hard on all of our skills and for some of us ( 6th grade) , getting ready for the middle school.
This week we are getting a special visitor from the middle school who is going to talk with us!!! Special Guest Speaker..the one and only Mr. Fickler!! Over the past few weeks we have been talking a lot about what to expect in the middle school. We have been sharing what we are excited for, nervous about or anything that we wanted to know more about. The students have been doing a great job of sharing their ideas... So ask your 6th grade student about their visitor from the middle school....

Last week we talked about taking ownership of our behaviors. In our discussions the students shared how we should own our behaviors and not blame others for what we do. We role played a few scenarios and watched some scenes of people who chose to lose control. Another topic we covered last week was not giving in to self-defeating behaviors. These are the behaviors that we do knowing that they will make things worse and not help solve the problem. We know that we will have consequences but seem to have a hard time not showing these self-defeating behaviors.
This week we will be working on coping strategies along with when we need to be flexible thinkers and problem solvers... Check back later this week for an update and to learn more about the little assignment the kids will have.
Starting last week we began working on reading the social cues all around us. We looked at pictures of people and talked about how they are feeling by looking at their facial expressions. We role played reading the cues in the classroom and knowing what to do based on the what others are doing.
This week we worked on understanding our behavior. We learned and talked about what is "expected" vs. what is "unexpected" behaviors in different environments such as school and home. There were some great role playing examples and the kids really did a great job discussing these new vocabulary terms.
